Description
The Sauter Rondo 122 is not a superficial “designer piano.” It is a serious, professional-level upright piano with a highly refined tonal personality and genuinely premium construction.
At the same time, it is also an emotional product — purchased as much with the eyes as with the ears.
Key points of the Rondo 122:
- Handcrafted German manufacturing in Spaichingen.
- Designed by Peter Maly.
- True height: 122 cm.
- Premium upright piano, clearly above most standard Japanese uprights in tonal refinement.
- Renner action with Sauter RR system (double repetition), inspired by grand piano behavior.
Design and construction
The Rondo 122 belongs to Sauter’s “Design Line.” The cabinet features curved shapes and a wing-style top lid, conceived not only for aesthetics but also to project sound more effectively into the room.
Visually, it is a very contemporary piano. It works especially well in minimalist, Scandinavian, or modern interiors. The key point, however, is that Sauter does not sacrifice acoustics for design — something that happens with many boutique brands.

Sound
The typical Sauter character is:
- Very transparent tone.
- Bright yet refined treble.
- Deep bass for a 122 cm upright.
- Rich harmonic complexity.
- Fast, highly “singing” attack.
It does not have the thick, dark sound typical of some older Bechstein pianos, nor the drier character of Yamaha. It also lacks the more diffuse romanticism of certain Blüthner instruments. Sauter generally sits in a cleaner, more precise, and elegant tonal space.
The Rondo 122 tends to be especially impressive for:
- Acoustic jazz,
- Impressionist music,
- Modern pop,
- Vocal accompaniment,
- Chamber classical repertoire.
Double repetition system
The RR double repetition system is genuinely noticeable. It does not turn the piano into a grand, but it does improve rapid repetition and fine control compared to many traditional upright pianos.
