An authentic grand piano action and wooden keys that guarantee control and expressiveness for the most demanding pieces
When it comes to expressing yourself musically, you need to create a connection with your instrument. In the case of the N1X, this connection starts with the keys. Wooden keys with a comfortable feel, thanks to the acrylic resin keytops, and a keyboard action that the AvantGrand series inherits from the best grand pianos. Under your fingers, you will precisely feel the same weight and response, the same possibilities for expression. To capture every subtle nuance of your performance, Yamaha uses a non-contact optical sensor system that measures the speed and depth at which each key is pressed. Another additional optical sensor attached to each hammer shank measures the time and force with which it strikes each virtual “string.” This information is immediately translated into a fantastic sound reproduction.

Two World-Renowned Pianos in One
When judging the sound of a piano, personal taste matters greatly. Yamaha offers you two of the world’s best grand pianos, each with its own unique character, so you can convey the emotion you want to express in each of your pieces. By pressing a single button on the new AvantGrand N1X, you can select the sound of the Yamaha CFX grand piano or the Bösendorfer Imperial. Yamaha’s flagship, the majestic CFX, offers a wide palette of tonal colors, from bright high notes to the most powerful bass. In turn, the legendary Bösendorfer is famous for its warm and subtle Viennese sound. Whichever you choose, their richness and realism will allow you to explore every corner of your expressiveness.
Spatial Acoustic Sampling, Spatial Acoustic Speaker System
With the introduction of AvantGrand, Yamaha initiated a revolution in the way acoustic piano notes were recorded, sampled, and then reproduced. Using the soundboard not only as a point source of sound but as a plane, we sampled the piano from 4 positions, adding a microphone in the center of the piano and another at the end of the tail, in addition to the typical left and right.
Likewise, the AvantGrand speaker system has been designed to ensure that the sound is best heard from the pianist’s position. A 3-way system, with woofers, mid-range speakers, and tweeters, faithfully reproduces the rich and natural sound of a piano soundboard. In fact, each speaker group is assigned its own amplifier to prevent interference between the different frequency bands. This innovative configuration allows the sound system to reproduce the details of every note of the piano.
Virtual Resonance Modeling
In a grand piano, sound resonates throughout the body of the instrument, producing a reverberation that envelops the listener in sound. This phenomenon is perfectly reproduced in the N1X thanks to Virtual Resonance Modeling (VRM), which continuously calculates the state of each of the strings of each of the 88 notes on the keyboard.
As a result, the N1X reflects the unlimited number of factors inherent to a grand piano: which keys are being pressed, the force with which they are pressed, or the exact moment the pedal is engaged.
The Feel of a Real Grand Piano Pedal
The N1X has a damper pedal that recreates the subtle changes in stiffness present in a real grand piano’s pedal. What’s more, the N1X’s damper pedal allows you to use the same half-pedal technique you would use on a grand piano, thus offering absolute control over resonance and reverberation.
A Totally Immersive Experience with Headphones
Thanks to our advanced binaural sampling technology, the sound you hear through the headphones is extremely realistic. This technology uses piano samples recorded with specialized microphones that capture information about the position and other nuances that our ears can distinguish. The resulting sound is so natural, so immersive, that you will completely forget you are wearing headphones. (CFX Grand Piano Voice only).
The Elegant Design Line of Yamaha Grand Pianos
The N1X graces any room thanks to the distinctive and refined curves characteristic of a Grand Piano, but in a much more compact instrument. We have not overlooked a single detail, ensuring that it looks and feels like a real Grand Piano, whether you are listening to its careful sound from the living room sofa, or sitting in front of a complicated final piece from the Conservatory.
Intuitive User Interface and Smart Pianist Integration
Behind its simple control panel, the N1X has a multitude of connectivity options to achieve maximum functionality and integration with external devices. It can connect directly to computers, phones, and tablets via USB, to sound and recording systems via audio cables, function as a Bluetooth receiver, and integrate with iOS apps via Wi-Fi. With the “Smart Pianist” app for iOS version 2.0 or higher, playing the piano is much more interesting than ever as you can control all functions from your iPhone or iPad.
